Hays County is one of the fastest-growing areas in Texas. Located in the northeastern corner of Hays County is the town of Niederwald, Texas. Niederwald is a small community with a rural atmosphere and country feel in north-eastern Hays County, yet is only 30 minutes from Austin, 20 minutes to Austin Bergstrom International Airport and San Marcos, and only 5 minutes from the Texas 130 Tollway.
Niederwald was founded by German pioneers after the Civil War. The name, which means "low brushy area" in the German language, referred to the growth of mesquite trees in the shallow valley where the settlers lived alongside the old Austin-San Antonio road. |
